Ice Prince wins ‘Best African Act’ at 2013 BET Awards

Rapper Ice Prince beat 2face Idibia, Toya Delazy from South Africa, Donald from South Africa,  R2Bees from Ghana and Radio and Weasel from Uganda to win the 2013 Best African Act at the BET Awards this evening. Congratulations to Ice Prince.

Nigerian Senator Pius Ewherido is Dead...

Senator representing Delta Central Senatorial District at the National Assembly, Senator Pius Ewherido has died.

The senator reportedly fell down three days ago and collapsed at his Abuja home while making a phone call and had been hospitalized at the National Hospital Abuja in preparation for treatment in Germany when he suddenly collapsed and died in hospital today.

Prison break in Ondo State....

Over 170 inmates were set free today during a brazen attack on the Olokuta medium security prison in Akure by armed gunmen who set off explosives and broke in shooting sporadically into the air.

The incident happened in the early hours of today.  At least four persons were injured in the gun battle, but nobody was reported to have been killed
Sources at the prison revealed that the bandits were very clear about their mission.  

"They came and were calling the names of people they want to set free,” one of them said.  “There is this particular name from Edo state that they were calling simultaneously. I think he is a prominent criminal in the prison. The name is from the Benin area".


Speaking to reporters shortly after the incident, the Comptroller of Prisons in the state, Tunde Olayiwola, said some of the inmates who escaped during the jail break have been re-arrested.  He confirmed that one officer was seriously injured, and was rushed to the hospital for treatment.  He did not disclose the officer’s name.....

President Obama visits Robben Island, Slave Port during African tour

 US President Barack Obama has toured Robben Island - the jail in which Nelson Mandela was kept for 18 years. He said he and his family were "deeply humbled" to visit the prison once inhabited by Mr Mandela - who remains critically ill in hospital.

President Obama had earlier visited the ‘Maison Des Esclaves’ ---- the slave port in Senegal where African slaves were deported to the Americas through the ‘point of no return’ door where President Obama stands in the picture….

Thompson Oliha, Former Super Eagles Star, is Dead

Former Super Eagles star, Thompson Oliha, Is Dead. Oliha who was born in October 1968 in Benin City, Nigeria, died in the early hours of Sunday. Until his death, Oliha was one of the coaches at the Kwara State Football Academy in Ilorin. Sam Elijah, former teammate and colleague at Kwara Academy, confirmed Oliha’s death to PREMIUM TIMES in a telephone chat.

A retired Nigerian midfielder, Oliha played for clubs in Africa and Europe during a career marred by injury.
He played for Bendel Insurance (1985-1987), Iwuanyanwu Nationale (1988-1991), Africa Sports (1992-1993), Maccabi Ironi Ashdod F.C. (1993-1994) and Antalyaspor (1994-1995).
As a player, he was known for his powerful shots and abilities in the air. Oliha retired at the age of 27, as a result of a serious knee injury.

One of the wishes of Oliha before his death was for the federal government to fulfil the promise of a house General Sani Abacha promised the Super Eagles for winning the Tunisia 1994 Nations Cup. Sadly, he did not see that come true in his life time. Oliha becomes the third player to die among the much celebrated Nigeria 1994 squad, joining Uche Okafor and Rashidi Yekini in the great beyond.

Gov. Amechi and President Jonathan Meets in Port Harcourt

A few days after bodyguards of Mr. Jonathan prevented Rivers State governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi from shaking hands with him at a presidential dinner last week in Abuja. Amaechi met President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan at the Port Harcourt International airport today and both embraced each other in the presence of a faction of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) led by a junior minister of Education, Nyeson Wike at the airport.

Mr. Jonathan was on his way to Abuja from Bayelsa  state where he commissioned a hospital and visited the federal university at his Otueke village.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency on Friday said controversial Nigerian actress, Tonto Dikeh, risks a minimum of 15 years in jail for encouraging the consumption of hemp. The Presidency on Thursday defended  the prevention of Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State from exchanging pleasantries with President Goodluck Jonathan by a security operative during dinner at the Presidential Villa, Abuja on Wednesday.  It said the incident was purely a security issue that should not be politicized, especially by opposition political parties.

The governor, who was sitting two tables away from the President, had risen to greet him but the security operative attached to the President stopped him halfway.

Drama as Amechi and Jang sits near each other at NEC meeting

A drama played out at the Council Chambers of the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Thursday as the two governors laying claim to the chairmanship of the factionalised Nigeria Governors’ Forum, Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State and Jonah Jang of Plateau State, sat side by side at the National Economic Council meeting, presided over by Vice President Namadi Sambo.

The VP, all state governors, ministers of Finance, National Planning and Justice are members of the council.
Both governors had been said to be determined to occupy a hitherto reserved sit for the NGF chairman at the NEC meeting. The adjustment in the seating arrangement however averted what could have been a confrontation between the  two feuding governors.

Gov. Fashola clocks 50... Pres. Jonathan congratulates him

Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos state today attained the golden age of 50 years. The Action Congress of Nigeria ACN governor who is wildly acknowledged to have performed well has continued to receive congratulatory messages from Nigerians among who is President Goodluck Jonathan.

Obama arrives in Senegal to begin African tour

US President Barack Obama has arrived in Senegal to begin a long awaited first major tour of Africa.
Obama's arrival in Dakar marks the first leg of a three country tour, that also includes South Africa and Tanzania, on a trip where he is expected to focus on deepening economic cooperation with the continent.
Obama's itinerary is subject to change as concerns rise over the ailing health of South Africa's former president and icon Nelson Mandela.

£3,000 visa bond: We will retaliate, Nigeria Government warns Britain

Nelson Mandela remains in a Critical Condition for Second Day

President Jacob Zuma said on Monday that Nelson Mandela remained in critical condition for a second day in a hospital in Pretoria where he is being treated for a lung infection.

“Doctors are doing everything possible to ensure his well-being and comfort,” Mr. Zuma said at a news conference in Johannesburg, but he gave few details about the condition of Mr. Mandela, who was hospitalized on June 8.

Britain plans £3000 Visa bonds for most 'high risk' African and Asian Countries

Britain is planning to force visitors from Nigeria, India, Pakistan, and other countries whose nationals are deemed to pose a “high risk” of immigration abuse to provide a cash bond before they can enter the country, a report said Sunday.The Sunday Times newspaper said that from November, a pilot scheme would target visitors from those three countries plus Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Ghana.

Visitors aged 18 and over would be forced to hand over £3,000 ($4,600, 3,500 euros) from November for a six-month visit visa.They will forfeit the money if they overstay in Britain after their visa has expired. Initially the scheme will target hundreds of visitors, but the plan is to extend it to several thousand, according to the broadsheet’s front-page report.
