Delta state university student killed Badagry Lagos, Nigeria

Policemen attached to the Badagry Police Division, Lagos State, and some hoodlums have been accused of killing a 25-year-old undergraduate of Delta State University, Ifechukwude Nwainokpor, and his friend, identified simply as Kazeem. An eight-minute video clip of the gruesome killing, which was made available to PUNCH Metro, showed the two victims handcuffed together. They were covered in their own blood and beaten to death with sticks. Tyres were also put round  their necks. An irate mob could be seen in the video, shouting, “die, die, burn them, burn them.” At some points in the video, a policeman was seen interviewing the boys. Bradley Manning guilty of espionage in Wikileaks case, faces 136 years in prison

Bradley Manning, the US Army private who leaked thousands of classified documents, has been convicted of espionage but not of aiding the enemy. Pte Manning, 25, has been convicted of 20 charges in total, including theft and computer fraud. He had admitted leaking the documents to anti-secrecy organisation Wikileaks but said he did so to spark a debate on US foreign policy.

The leak is considered the largest ever of secret US government files.He faces a maximum sentence of up to 136 years. His sentencing hearing is set to begin on Wednesday.

Pope Francis to gays; I will not Judge you

Pope Francis appears to have softened the Catholic Church’s attitude towards homosexuality and gay priests, in a remarkably candid interview given to journalists aboard the papal plane as he returned to Rome from his week-long trip to Brazil.In the first press conference of his four month papacy, the 76-year-old pontiff said it was not for him to judge if someone was homosexual.

 “If someone is gay and he searches for the Lord and has good will, who am I to judge?”

 Francis asked, as he returned from the first overseas trip since being elected Pope in March. He said there should be no discrimination against gays, but also reaffirmed the Catholic Church’s universal catechism, which says that while homosexual orientation is not sinful, homosexual acts are.

Amaechi Consoles First Lady Patience Jonathan over Mother’s Death

Rivers State Governor, Mr. Chibuike Amaechi, has commiserated with First Lady, Mrs. Patience Jonathan, over the death of her foster mother, Mrs. Charity Oba. Amaechi, who just returned to the country from the United Kingdom where he was when Oba died in a road crash last Monday while travelling to Bayelsa State, said he received the news of Obah’s death with shock and sadness. The governor, in a statement, however urged the family to bear the loss with hope as Christians.

Christian Benitez: Former Birmingham striker dies aged 27 from Cardiac Arrest

                                      
Former Birmingham striker Christian Benitez has died at the age of 27, after his heart stopped. The Ecuador international was admitted to hospital with severe stomach pains shortly after making his debut for Qatari side El Jaish on Sunday. He then suffered a "cardiorespiratory arrest" hours later and died, the Ecuador Football Federation said. Benitez, who won 58 caps for his country, spent the 2009-10 season on loan at St Andrew's from Santos Laguna. He returned to the Mexican club in 2010 after Birmingham opted against a permanent deal for him. Benitez, also known as 'Chucho', had been playing in El Jaish's 2-0 win against Qatar Sports Club in the Sheikh Jassem Cup. His new club, who signed Benitez on 6 July, confirmed the news a few hours later.

UK visa: Nigerians begin payment of £3,000 bond November

OUTCRY against its £3,000 tourists visa bond notwithstanding, Britain will commence the scheme in the six listed Commonwealth countries in November, Financial Times report quoted the Home Office as saying.
The Commonwealth countries to be affected by the policy which was announced in June are Nigeria, India, Kenya, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Bangladesh. The affected countries are considered to be source of “high risk” tourists to the UK. Some visitors from the six countries, under the scheme, will be asked to pay a £3,000 cash bond in return for visitor visas that allow them to stay in the UK for up to six months.

According to official data, these six countries accounted for more than half a million visa applications in 2012. There have been outpours of anger by governments of the affected countries, especially Nigeria and India against the policy. 1,000 inmates escape from Libyan prison

More than a thousand inmates escaped a prison Saturday in Libya as protesters stormed political party offices across the country, signs of the simmering unrest gripping a nation overrun by militias and awash in weaponry. It wasn't immediately clear if the jailbreak at al-Kweifiya prison came as part of the demonstrations. Protesters had massed across Libya over the killing of an activist critical of the country’s Muslim Brotherhood group. Inmates started a riot and set fires after security forces opened fire on three detainees who tried to escape the facility outside of Benghazi, a security official at al-Kweifiya prison said. Gunmen quickly arrived to the prison after news of the riot spread, opening fire with rifles outside in a bid to free their imprisoned relatives, a Benghazi-based security official said.

Those who escaped either face or were convicted of serious charges, the prison official said.
The two officials spoke on condition of anonymity as they weren't authorized to speak to journalists.
Special forces later arrested 18 of the escapees, while some returned on their own, said Mohammed Hejazi, a government security official in Benghazi. The three inmates wounded in the initial escape attempt were taken to a local hospital, he said. There was confusion, however, about how many prisoners exactly broke out, with numbers of escapees ranging as high as 1,200. Rihanna fined $47,000 for not showing up for deposition

Rihanna has been fined $47,000 for acting iressponsibily by not turning up for a deposition (Giving testimony to an attorney which is recorded by a court offical) date. Rihanna's ex-accountants have been trying to get the singer to sit for a deposition in a lawsuit she filed against them. Rihanna claims they mismanaged her money and owed her millions, but the accountants claim Rihanna's the one who's at fault.

According to the accountants -- Berdon LLP -- Rihanna's been blowing off deposition after deposition (Lindsay-style) costing them boatloads in attorneys' fees, so Berdon asked the judge to punish the singer. And this month, the judge agreed, fining Rihanna $47,050 for Berdon's legal bills.

Ariel Castro, American kidnapper sentenced to 1,000 years in prison

Ariel Castro agreed Friday in an Ohio courtroom to a plea deal in one of the most sensational kidnapping cases in recent memory. The deal, reached with prosecutors, would let him avoid the possibility of a death sentence and spare his alleged victims from having to testify at a trial. The plea deal recommends that he be sentenced to life in prison without parole -- that he never get a parole hearing. It could also mean that a trial Castro was facing on August 5 will not happen and he will not face the possibility of being sentenced to death. Judge Michael J. Russo went over the deal with Castro, and told him that he would be labeled as a sexual predator.

Under the terms of the plea deal Castro will receive an additional prison sentence of 1,000 years and his property and other assets will be forfeited. He will also be classified as a sex offender.

Child for bride row, Senator Ayo Akinyelure cries saying 'I voted in error'

A crowd of protesters yesterday stormed a town hall meeting in Akure, the capital city of Ondo State, wher Senator Ayo Akinyelure (Ondo Central Senatorial District) spoke. Armed with placards with abusive inscriptions, the protesters demanded the senator’s removal following his vote for a widely condemned measure that approved early child marriage.The protests drove Mr. Akinyelure to tears as he explained that his vote was misunderstood and also apologized to his constituents.

Among the protesters were elderly women, widows and clergymen. Many of the demonstrators were teenagers who chanted angry slogans and urged voters in the state to register displeasure with what they termed the “barbaric attitude” of Nigerian senators who endorsed the idea of marrying off teenage girls.

Rivers Assembly crisis, Lawmaker who attacked Colleague Chidi Llyod detained by police

The Majority Leader of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Chidi Lloyd, on Tuesday  showed up at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, exactly seven  days after he was  invited by the police over the free-for-all by some members of the assembly.The Majority leader, who had earlier been declared wanted by the Rivers State Police Command in connection with the fracas, arrived at the Force Headquarters at   5. 45pm  and   was immediately directed to the Force Criminal Investigation Department, where he was asked to write his statement.

A top Police source, who confirmed the lawmakers arrival, said it was unlikely that he would be released on Tuesday as a team of investigators needed to interrogate him.

Real Madrid striker Cristiano Ronaldo showed his raw physical strength in a pre-season friendly when his astray freekick broke a fan’s wrist.

Sky Sports reports that Charlie Silverwood was left doubled-over in agony after the 35-yard rocket broke his wrist in two places. Nigeria's Junior Minister for Health resigns

The Minister of State, Health, Dr.  Muhammed Pate, on Wednesday voluntarily resigned from President Goodluck Jonathan’s cabinet.

In his resignation letter dated July 22 and addressed to the President, Pate said he was leaving the cabinet to take up the position of  Professor in Duke University’s Global Health Institute USA in which capacity he will participate in a university-wide Africa initiative, and will also serve  as Senior Adviser to Bill and Melinda Gates  Foundation based in Washington DC.

Rivers crisis ... Panacea for peace?

Akpan Kennena, having traced the history of the political crisis in Rivers State, gives some suggestions on the way forward That house was one of the most unified in the nation until the removal of the duly elected chairman of Obio-Akpor Local Government Area. Five members of the house objected to the process used in removing him and they described it as undemocratic because it did not follow due legislative process. The other 27 stuck to their gun. The state government denied involvement in what was purely a legislative action.

The governor, Mr. Chibuike Amaechi, appointed a caretaker chairman who took over from the elected chairman. It later emerged that the removed elected chairman was sympathetic to the Minister of State for
Education, Nyesom Wike, who is believed to have been instrumental to his getting the ticket to contest. The other five legislators are also beneficiaries of Nwike's influence as Amaechi's Chief of Staff and the most powerful local politician of those days. Those seeking a solution to the crisis should also look at the Obio-Akpor situation. It needs resolution because I don't believe the constitution envisaged a situation where an elected LGA chairman will retain his seat at the mercy of state legislators. If that is the case, we need urgent amendment to the constitution. That it was called "suspension" suggests to me that a loophole in the state

Norwegian woman sentenced to jail for being raped is 'freed to go'

You would remember the woman that I reported to you that was sentenced to 16 months in jail for being raped in Dubia?... She has been pardoned and is free to leave Dubai.  Interior designer Marte Deborah Dalelv, 24, was on a business trip in Dubai when she says she was raped in March.

She reported the attack to the police, but was charged with perjury, having extramarital sex and drinking alcohol, receiving a 16-month prison sentence. The case has angered rights groups and the Norwegian authorities.
