A three-storey building collapsed on Oloto Street,
Ebute Meta, Lagos on Thursday morning, leaving no fewer than seven people dead,
while seven others were critically injured. Among the dead were a one-year-old
baby and the mother, a pregnant woman and her husband. An unspecified number of
occupants of the house were still trapped in the rubble. The baby was found
dead on the chest of the mother. The husband and the rest of their children,
however, survived.
In the same vain, tragedy struck on Thursday in
Kaduna following the collapse of a three-storey building in the metropolis.
Scores of traders and residents, including six children were said to have been
trapped in the building which served both residential and commercial purposes.
Residents as well as traders in the market watched helplessly for three hours
without sighting rescue operators. The state Governor, Ramallan Yero, one of
the early callers at the scene of the incident, wept on sighting the building.
He left the scene of the incident and came back at about 4.50pm when a crane
from the Julius Berger Construction Company had commenced work on the collapse
building.
However, the Executive Secretary of the State Emergency Management
Agency, Mr. Nuhu Makanma said nobody was trapped in the building.The
three-storey building on Gombe road in the Sheikh Abubakar Gummi Central Market
collapse at about 2.15pm, according to eyewitness.
